UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has ignited widespread anger by suggesting that boys should be allowed to wear dresses to school as part of experimenting with their gender identity. In an LBC radio interview, Phillipson argued that children will “experiment at different points” and schools should take a “watchful approach” rather than “coming down too hard,” claiming this could reduce the need for medical interventions.
She referenced the Cass Review, which advised caution on gender issues in children. Phillipson clarified that primary schools must “tread with a lot of care,” especially involving parents unless there are safeguarding reasons. “If a boy wants to wear dresses, we should just… if we allow that to work,” she said. “Children will experiment at different points. They will consider who they are. Just taking a watchful approach, not coming down too hard on that, actually reduces what we see in terms of children moving towards a more medicalised model.”
The comments follow new trans guidance for schools that relaxes previous Tory-proposed rules banning pronoun changes in primaries. Conservative Shadow Equalities Minister Claire Coutinho condemned the policy, stating it involves “lying to young children” and urged protecting childhood. Reform UK’s equalities spokesman Suella Braverman vowed to ban social and gender transitioning in all schools, calling it a “dangerous ideology” indoctrinating children.
Public backlash was swift, with online comments labeling the idea harmful to society and inappropriate for schools. “No wonder the army is screwed… our kids are being turned into wet farts… another fad wrecking society,” one user wrote. Others decried it as “absolute psycho” behavior.This push exemplifies leftist overreach in education, introducing gender confusion to young minds and undermining parental authority. Traditional values hold that childhood should focus on learning core skills, not experimental ideologies that erode natural gender roles and family protections.
