The French government has declared what it is calling a “general mobilization” against pro-life activists, with Minister Delegate for Gender Equality Aurore Bergé announcing coordinated state action in the National Assembly following a series of incidents targeting pro-abortion facilities across northern France.
Bergé made the declaration in response to questions from MP Sandra Regol, who reported that Family Planning centers — a network of abortion advocacy and service organizations — had been targeted six times in five years.
Bergé confirmed she is in “very regular” contact with Family Planning’s leadership to ensure protection of its facilities, and noted that government funding for such associations has “more than tripled over the past ten years.” She framed the mobilization as a defense of abortion access, which was constitutionalized in France in March 2024 by a parliamentary vote of 780 to 72 — making France the first country in the world to enshrine abortion in its constitution.
In 2023, France recorded 243,623 abortions — 8,600 more than the prior year — against 678,000 live births. France’s Catholic bishops’ conference has noted that France is the only Western European country where abortion numbers are not declining but are in fact rising.
The French government has chosen the side of a culture of death. “Mobilization” against pro-life groups as a whole signals the oppression and persecution pro-life advocates will face in the country.
