President Joe Biden, a Catholic, recently celebrated veteran feminist and pro-abortion advocate Eleanor Smeal with the Presidential Citizens Medal. This award distinguishes US citizens for their extraordinary service to the nation or fellow citizens. Smeal’s recognition trails Biden’s previous awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Cecile Richards, the former head of Planned Parenthood. These awards are a significant contradiction given the honorees’ firm pro-abortion stances, which starkly contrast Catholic teachings.
Eleanor Smeal, presently the president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, previously served as the president of the National Organization for Women (NOW). Smeal led the first national pro-abortion march in Washington, DC in 1986, which saw participation from over 100,000 protestors. Smeal, raised as Catholic, has previously expressed her criticism towards the Catholic Church for its teaching on life’s sanctity, opposition to birth control, and teachings on human sexuality.
This decision by the Biden administration mirrors the growing alignment of Biden’s rule with a staunchly pro-abortion agenda. This stance is being implemented across different domains, including executive orders, guidance from government bureaucrats, and legal disputes. In stark contrast to his claim as a faithful Catholic, Biden’s presidency has prioritised pro-abortion policies that contravene Catholic doctrines protecting the sanctity of life.
