Japan’s parliament has elected Sanae Takaichi as the country’s first female prime minister, marking a historic milestone. At age 64, she also becomes the first woman to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Takaichi, known as a hard-line conservative and longtime protégé of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, supports a strong military, increased fiscal stimulus, tougher immigration controls and a more assertive foreign policy toward China. She has also held traditionalist stances, including opposition to same-sex marriage.
Looking ahead, Takaichi faces major challenges: stabilizing Japan’s economy amid inflation, maintaining strong ties with the U.S., and ensuring her minority coalition can govern effectively. The stage is set for a potentially transformative era in Japanese politics.
