Fran Itkoff, a 90-year-old woman who has been volunteering at the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society for 60 years, was discharged from her volunteer duties for allegedly not comprehending the use of pronouns. The decision, revealed during an interview with Chaya Raichik from Libs of TikTok, was made after Itkoff was asked to use pronouns in her email signature. Itkoff’s inability to understand the significance of this led to her dismissal, invoking a considerable backlash.
The decision to dismiss Itkoff was conveyed via an email from Kali Kulor, a National MS Society Community Engagement Manager. The email cited the violation of the NGO’s “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” guidelines, causing the Itkoff’s removal effective immediately. Elle, Itkoff’s daughter, criticized the move, stating the irony of preaching inclusivity while excluding a 90-year-old disabled woman who has volunteered selflessly for several decades.
Following the furore raised by the dismissal, the National MS Society affirmed their decision, claiming its necessity to maintain a safe work environment. Furthermore, the voluntary retirement of the society’s President and CEO, Cyndi Zagieboylo, intensified the controversy surrounding the issue.
