A premium institution in Victoria, the Geelong Grammar School, is under fire for its decision to house a male student identifying as a female in the girls’ dormitory. This decision, met with backlash from a father who subsequently removed his daughter from the school, highlights simmering tensions regarding gender in educational spaces.
The school’s Principal, Rebecca Cody, upheld the school’s commitment to inclusivity and affirmed that the boarding situation would consider the students’ gender identities. The school’s policy aligns with the Child Safe Standards, necessitating respect for diversity and particular attention to LGBT students in all Victorian schools.
Such decisions infringe upon the sex-based rights of female students. Accommodation for gender identity should not translate into neglect for biological differences and the potential implications for the comfort and safety of female students. Validating a student’s gender dysphoria through preferential treatment does not offer a viable solution to the underlying issues, and moreover, it erodes essential sex-based rights.
