The Kingdom of Thailand has further liberalized its abortion legislation.

From now on, women will be allowed to have abortions up to the 20th week of pregnancy. The amendment was published in the Royal Gazette on September 26.

Until recently, abortions were prohibited in Thailand without exception, except in cases of rape or risk to the mother’s health. The legislation was first liberalized with the legalization of abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy as recently as February.

Women who are considering abortion and are already past 12 weeks are required to have a medical consultation under the amended law.

The new rule will take effect one month after it is announced, on October 26, 2022.
