Texas authorities have arrested eight people in connection with an ongoing investigation into Houston midwife Maria Margarita Rojas, who is accused of performing illegal abortions. State Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrests Wednesday, saying the suspects allegedly practiced medicine without a license and violated state abortion laws.
Rojas was charged in March with performing abortions illegally and pretending to be a doctor. The new arrests, Paxton said, expand the scope of the case.
According to officials, those arrested were employees who helped Rojas operate her clinics. The attorney general’s office said their work involved unlicensed medical procedures.
Paxton called the arrests a “major victory” for enforcing Texas’s abortion ban, stating that his office “will continue to hold lawbreakers accountable.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say more charges could follow as they work to uncover the full extent of the alleged illegal operation.
