U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a powerful defense of Western civilization’s Christian roots during his address at the Munich Security Conference on February 14, 2026, urging Europe and America to reclaim their shared heritage amid rising global threats.

Speaking to leaders from across the continent, Rubio highlighted the unbreakable bond between the U.S. and Europe: “We are part of one civilization—Western civilization. We are bound to one another by the deepest bonds that nations could share, forged by centuries of shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry, and the sacrifices our forefathers made together.” He traced America’s founding to Europe’s Christian traditions, noting that the settlers who built the nation carried “the memories and the traditions and the Christian faith of their ancestors as a sacred inheritance.”

Rubio warned that post-Cold War illusions of borderless commerce and migration have weakened national sovereignty, linking open borders to cultural erosion and social instability. “We cannot continue to allow those who blatantly and openly threaten our citizens and endanger our global stability to shield themselves behind abstractions of international law,” he declared.

The speech also addressed ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and Venezuela’s crisis, advocating for stronger national power and allied coordination on defense, supply chains, and emerging technologies like AI and space. European reactions were mixed, with calls for bolstered military capabilities from figures like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Rubio’s remarks align with President Trump’s America First agenda, reinforcing the need to preserve the Christian foundations that built the West against secular globalism and unchecked migration.
