Right-wing Chilean Catholic wins presidential election

Chile has elected José Antonio Kast as president. Kast, a devout Catholic and father of nine, secured 58.2% of the vote against leftist Jeannette Jara’s 41.8%, pledging to restore order by cracking down on crime, deporting illegal immigrants, and revitalizing the economy through free-market reforms. This victory reflects widespread frustration with rising insecurity and economic stagnation under the center-left government of Gabriel Boric, as Chileans demand a return to stability and traditional values.

Kast’s supporters celebrated wildly in Santiago’s streets, hailing his “broad mandate” to recover moral order and healthy living, while he urged respect for opponents in a measured victory speech. Jara, a Communist Party member and former labor minister from a working-class background, conceded graciously but encouraged persistence among her followers. Kast’s win aligns with a regional shift toward right-wing governance, as seen in Argentina under Javier Milei, and drew swift praise from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for advancing security, immigration control, and trade—signaling a bulwark against leftist excesses in Latin America.

The election exposed deep polarization, pitting Kast’s moral conservatism—opposing same-sex marriage and abortion—against Jara’s progressive welfare agenda rooted in anti-dictatorship activism. This outcome rejects the radical left’s failures under Boric, favoring a hard-line approach to restore Chile’s status as Latin America’s economic beacon.

Facing congressional hurdles without a Republican majority, Kast must deliver on promises like building mega-prisons inspired by El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele, empowering police, constructing border barriers akin to Trump’s, and slashing government spending without cutting benefits. Economists question the feasibility, but his vows to reduce taxes and bureaucracy aim to revive 1990s-era growth. By governing moderately and curbing radical instincts, Kast could succeed where Boric faltered, prioritizing public safety and fiscal responsibility over ideological overreach.
