Liz Truss’ victory over her party colleague Rishi Sunak for the Conservative Tory party chair also made her the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her predecessor, Boris Johnson, lost the presidency and the government position after an internal party vote of no confidence because of several different political affairs, including debauched partying during government-imposed corona lockdowns.

What can we now expect from the new head of the British government with regard to the protection of life and family rights?

No ally in the protection of life

Unfortunately, Truss’ voting record to date does not indicate the possibility of support for the protection of life. Since her first appointment to the House in 2010, she has either voted to expand abortion legislation or abstained.

In 2011, for example, she voted against the introduction of independent counseling for women in crisis pregnancy, which would have prohibited counseling by abortion providers themselves.

She also voted several times for the introduction of abortion in Northern Ireland. On the introduction of assisted suicide, Truss abstained.

A draw on family policy

On family policy, Truss voted for the introduction of “same-sex marriage” and also supported the ban on so-called conversion therapies. Nevertheless, even under her as Minister of Equality in the last government, a ban on conversion therapy was not passed.

Truss is at the same time a staunch opponent of identity politics, which seeks to assign social position not on the basis of merit but membership in a social group. This is how she is quoted to talkRADIO:

“We have to get away from the idea that someone is appointed to office because of their appearance–no one wants to be the token woman, you don’t want to feel like you’ve been appointed to office because you have breasts. Neither does anyone want to be the token gay man. I think we need to think about this differently.”

In 2020, as Minister of Equality, she also rejected calls for gender dysphoric persons to be allowed to change their legal gender without a medical opinion.

Time will tell whether Truss will develop more uncompromising and authentically conservative policies in the two policy areas or continue to slave away driven by leftist social pressures.
