Vice President Kamala Harris said that anyone who opposes the approval and distribution of abortion pills is attacking the fundamental rights of American citizens and the American health care system. “Now there are political and partisan attacks trying to question the legitimacy of a group of scientists and doctors who have studied the significance of this drug,” Harris said, as reported by Axios. “This is not only an attack on women’s basic freedoms. It is an attack on the very foundation of our public health care system.”
The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in November 2022 against the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on behalf of four national medical associations and several physicians, alleging that the agency “chose politics over science and approved chemical abortion drugs for use in the United States.” The lawsuit refers to six separate agency actions since the legalization of mifepristone and misoprostol in 2000 and asks the court to declare those actions illegal, which would lead to the ultimate elimination of mifepristone from the market. The complaint alleges that “the only way” the agency could have approved chemical abortifacient drugs “was to use its expedited drug approval authority, making it necessary for the FDA to define pregnancy as a ‘disease’ and claim that these dangerous drugs provide a ‘significant therapeutic benefit’ over existing treatments.”
But pregnancy is not a disease, and chemical abortion drugs do not provide a therapeutic benefit over surgical abortion. By stating these patently false conclusions, the FDA overstepped its regulatory authority to approve the drugs. Also, the FDA never studied the safety of mifepristone under the labeled conditions of use. It ignored the potential impacts of the hormone-blocking regimen on the developing bodies of adolescent girls, and ignored evidence that chemical abortion drugs cause more complications than surgical abortion. On top of all that, it eliminated the necessary safeguards for girls and pregnant women taking the regimen. In 2021, the FDA allowed abortionists to send mifepristone by mail, which, according to the ADF, is “in direct violation of federal law.”
The case that could prove medical and pro-life organizations right and block the sale and distribution of ‘kill pills’ throughout the United States is Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, No. 2:22-cv-223, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Obviously, Vice President Kamala Harris will not back down and with her recent threats she represents the wishes and concerns of the many, many pro-abortion corporations that she and President Biden represent and put before the rights of conceived children.
