Former President Donald Trump has accused the Democrats of targeting Catholics, focusing on Vice President Kamala Harris’s questioning of Knights of Columbus members during judicial nomination processes. During a speech at Turning Point Action’s Believers Summit, Trump suggested the current administration was placing undue scrutiny on Catholics, raising questions about Democratic voters within the faith community.
The former president’s commentary arrives amidst discussions over alleged investigations by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into Christian and pro-life activists. The Trump campaign highlights a since-retracted FBI memo hinting at links between traditionalist Catholics and white nationalist movements, criticising the Biden-Harris administration for allegedly persecuting religious believers.
Trump’s speech also promised a review of cases against political prisoners, referencing pro-life activist Paulette Harlow, who was sentenced to two years in jail for blocking access to an abortion clinic. Trump promised to establish a new federal task force to tackle anti-Christian bias and investigate discrimination against Christians in America.
Trump, who identifies as a non-denominational Christian, ran together with Catholic convert J.D. Vance. Notably, President Biden identifies as Catholic, and Vice President Harris is a Baptist.
