California to require children to have LGBT hotline on school IDs

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new law, AB 727, requiring all public middle and high schools—as well as colleges—to print the phone number of The Trevor Project, an LGBT-focused hotline, on student identification cards. The law applies to students in grades 7 through 12 and to all college campuses that issue IDs.

This new mandate is yet another example of the state’s growing push to inject progressive sexual and gender ideology into every corner of public education. Instead of promoting neutral mental-health resources available to all students, the state has chosen a hotline that explicitly markets itself around LGBT identity and activism. The Trevor Project has long advanced positions that align with radical gender theory, including the idea that minors should have access to gender-transition procedures without parental consent.

Governor Newsom praised the measure, claiming it would make LGBT students feel “seen” and “supported.” Assemblymember Mark González, who sponsored the bill, echoed that language, saying the hotline would help ensure that such youth are “never alone.” Yet the bill ignores the rights of parents and the broader need for mental-health resources that serve every student equally, regardless of ideology.

By mandating a politically charged resource on every student’s ID, the state blurs the line between education and activism. California schools are already required to include suicide-prevention hotlines and other general support numbers, yet this new law singles out one group and one organization that promotes a highly controversial worldview. Rather than strengthening families or fostering moral responsibility, Sacramento continues to sideline parents and promote social agendas under the banner of “support.”

Beginning July 1, 2026, every public secondary and college student in California will carry an ID card displaying The Trevor Project’s number—an unmistakable signal that the state’s education system now prioritizes ideological conformity over parental rights and true moral formation. This latest measure confirms that California’s leadership remains more interested in reshaping children’s beliefs than in protecting their well-being.
