The American Medical Association has reaffirmed its full support for gender-affirming care for minors, including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries, despite mounting evidence of harm and long-term regret. In a March 2026 policy clarification, the AMA declared that these interventions remain “medically necessary” for children experiencing gender dysphoria.
The organization pushed back against media reports suggesting it had shifted course after agreeing with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in February that surgical interventions for minors should generally be deferred until adulthood. The AMA stated its February comment was intended only for media use and does not reflect any change in official policy. It continues to endorse the experimental treatments despite growing international concern and restrictions in countries such as Sweden, Finland, Norway, and the United Kingdom, where independent reviews have found insufficient evidence of benefits and serious risks of irreversible damage.
This position ignores the increasing number of detransitioners who have suffered sterility, sexual dysfunction, bone loss, and profound psychological trauma after being rushed into medical transition. It also dismisses the scientific reality that the vast majority of children with gender dysphoria naturally resolve their distress if allowed to go through normal puberty. By doubling down on these harmful practices, the AMA is prioritizing ideological activism over medical ethics and the long-term well-being of children.
The organization’s refusal to acknowledge the mounting evidence highlights the deep ideological capture within parts of the medical establishment. As more states move to protect minors and the Trump administration works to restrict these procedures federally, the AMA’s stance stands in clear opposition to efforts to restore sanity and protect vulnerable youth from irreversible harm.
