More than 100,000 people showed up to support the protection of human life at a March for Life in the Spanish capital Madrid at the end of June, according to the organizers. The protest was focused on the government’s planned reform and liberalization of abortion legislation.

More than 200 civil society groups came to the June 26 protest to highlight the dangers of abortion reform. Jaime Mayor Oreja, one of the organizers, expressed that “the repeal of abortion in the United States shows us that the debate on the culture of life is far from over.”

“It is important to recruit and defend the Christian foundations of our society in the face of relentless social unrest. We are not here today to discuss the past, but to raise awareness and prepare for the debate in the future,” he added.

Under the draft law, which was approved by the Council of Ministers and will next be considered in the lower house of parliament, girls as young as 16 will be allowed to have an abortion without parental consent.

In Spain, abortion was legalized in 1985. To date, more than 2.5 million people have been killed in abortions because of this law.
