President Trump has named Dr. Nicole Saphier as his nominee for U.S. Surgeon General — his third pick for the role — after withdrawing the nomination of Casey Means, whose confirmation had stalled in the Senate over questions about her vaccine views and medical credentials.
Saphier is a radiologist and director of breast imaging at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and a former Fox News medical contributor. Trump described her on Truth Social as a “STAR physician” who has spent her career guiding women through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Saphier became pregnant at 17, was pressured to abort, and chose to carry her son. She later completed college, earned her medical degree, completed a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, and built a distinguished medical career. She has spoken publicly about her Catholic faith as a guiding factor in that decision.
Mary Szoch, director of the Center for Human Dignity at Family Research Council, said: “It’s great news that President Trump’s nominee for Surgeon General recognizes an unborn child in the womb is a person. Good health care begins with respect for life.”
NRLC Outreach Director Raimundo Rojas added: “America does not need a Surgeon General who treats motherhood as a burden or unborn children as abstractions. America needs leaders who understand that women need support, children deserve protection, and families form the heart of public health.” A confirmation hearing has not yet been scheduled.
