Multiple sclerosis patient postpones her euthanasia

"Belen's case is yet another example of how euthanasia protocols are failing. We are driving people with problems to take their own lives without offering them an alternative."

A woman from Santiago, Spain, whose mother helped her avoid the euthanasia procedure, requested the Regional Ministry of Health to postpone the procedure indefinitely.

Belén, the 54-year-old woman suffering from multiple sclerosis, asked to postpone indefinitely the euthanasia that had been granted to her. She did so by means of a notarial act before the Health Council of Galicia (Spain).

The decision comes weeks after her mother, at the advice of Christian Lawyers Foundation, did not open the door to the doctors who came to her daughter’s home on November 2 to take her to be euthanized.

The president of Christian Lawyers, Polonia Castellanos, stated: “Belén’s case is another example of how euthanasia protocols are failing. We are driving people with problems to take their own lives without offering them an alternative.

The Health Departments must review these protocols and establish mandatory psychological treatment as a prior step to euthanasia”.

IMPORTANT: Belén and her mother have declined to make statements. We ask that their decision be respected. Their lawyer, the president of Christian Lawyers, Polonia Castellanos, will attend the media as a spokesperson.
