Whoopi Goldberg was just suspended from the ABC talk show The View. Why? She claimed the Holocaust was not about race because Jews and Gypsies are “two groups of White people.” Goldberg must have slept through her high school’s history class because it is common knowledge that Hitler killed Jews, Gypsies, Poles, and Russians because he considered them all “inferior races.”
On The View on January 31, 2022, when one host criticized a bill in the Florida legislature that would ban in schools conversations on race and gender that could make students feel uncomfortable, another host stated that teaching about the Holocaust could soon be prohibited in schools. Goldberg then chimed in: “The Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race.” When another host said that the Germans “considered Jews a different race,” Goldberg remained adamant: “It’s not about race…It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about.” When another host remarked, “But it’s about a White supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies,” Goldberg responded: “But these are two White groups of people.”
For these comments, ABC suspended Goldberg from the view for two weeks. “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” said ABC News president Kim Godwin. “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments.”
What no one in the American media reporting on the story has emphasized is that Goldberg just could not allow herself to admit that Jews and Gypsies were victims of racism because her woke ideology fiercely holds that white people cannot be victims of racism. Goldberg is an unapologetic leftist and supporter of critical race theory (CRT). According to CRT, all whites are oppressors and all minorities are the oppressed; by definition white people cannot be victims of oppression. Indeed, CRT holds that “racism = power + discrimination.” Since white people are viewed as having power, they cannot be victims of racism, no matter that Hitler considered Jews, Gypsies, and Slavs as “inferior races.” Thus, Jews and Gypsies, being “white,” were not victims of racism by Hitler and the Nazis; rather, the Holocaust was a crime of a more vague description, originating in “man’s inhumanity to man.” Yet race was irrefutably a key component of Hitler’s ideology. And since one of the main points of Holocaust remembrance is to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again, removing the racial component from the Holocaust is something we do at our own great peril.
One person who did notice the effect of critical race theory on Goldberg’s thinking was the Australian commentator Rowan Dean. As reported by Sky News, Dean said about Goldberg and the radical left:
It just shows the rest of the world how insidious critical race theory and the new racism of the left is. That they genuinely believe that Hitler was not a racist. That’s how far, how low they have sunk in Western thinking.
So there you have it. A woke host of The View refuses to say the killing of Jews and Gypsies by Hitler was racist because according to the left, white people can never be victims of racism. Let us hope that during her two-week suspension Goldberg can rethink her devotion to critical race theory and the absurdities and inhumanity to which it leads.
