Virginia has taken bold action to confront a disturbing scandal. Governor Glenn Youngkin is “deeply concerned” about reports that school staff in Fairfax County arranged abortions for teens—without parental consent and possibly using public funds. Consequently, he has launched a criminal investigation to get to the bottom of the scandal. He directed the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to act immediately.
Reports say the incident occurred at Centreville High School in Fairfax County. Allegedly, a social worker, with the principal’s approval, scheduled and paid for abortions for two underage girls—without notifying their parents. One of the teens was 17. According to reporting by independent journalist Walter Curt, one girl was coerced into the clinic and sworn to secrecy. The other pleaded to keep her baby, but was told abortion was her “only choice.” Then, she fled the clinic.
Importantly, Virginia law requires parental consent at least 24 hours before a minor undergoes an abortion. Therefore, these allegations suggest serious, blatant violations of law. Furthermore, if public funds were used, then taxpayers were potentially misused to conceal these abortions.
These secret abortions are state funded child exploitation, and every official involved must be held accountable. This scandal underscores the larger war on parental rights, which must be enforced and protected in order to preserve the safety of their children.
