Today, the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee passed the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, which guards pregnancy centers from discrimination, ensuring they retain eligibility for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding. The legislation was proposed to counter a rule suggested by the Biden administration within the Health and Human Services (HHS) that could render such centers ineligible for this aid.
National pro-life group SBA Pro-Life America expressed appreciation for the committee’s efforts, lauding the decision as a victory for life-affirming non-profits. Honorable Marilyn Musgrave, Vice President of Government Affairs at SBA Pro-Life America, stated the Biden administration has shown a pro-abortion bias rather than a pro-choice stance. She praised the contribution of nearly 3,000 pregnancy resource centers nationwide, expressing gratitude for the bill that would protect these centers from potential discrimination, ensuring continued access to TANF funds.
The bill received further support from Chairman Jason Smith and Representatives Michelle Fischbach, Claudia Tenney and Chris Smith, crucial contributors to the pivotal legislation. As political attacks on life-affirming organizations increase, the proposed rule signals an attempt to protect these institutions. The House is likely to vote on this bill as early as next week.
