Trump administration rescinds paid leave and travel expenses for abortion-seeking military personnel

President Trump has made a key change to a Biden-era policy, removing member privileges for paid leave and reimbursed travel expenses for military personnel based in states where abortion is restricted. The Defense Travel Management Office confirmed the action to “Remove Travel for Non-Covered Reproductive Health Care Services” prompted by President Trump’s executive order “Enforcing the Hyde Amendment.” The amendment, passed in 1976, prohibits federal funding for abortions.

According to Trump’s order, this is in line with the policy of the U.S., which endeavors to stop the compulsory use of federal taxpayer money to finance or advocate elective abortions. Pro-life Senator Tommy Tuberville from Alabama initiated a campaign that took ten months to pressure the administration into withdrawing the policy. Tuberville was pleased with the change, stating, “For the past two years, I have been sounding the alarm about the Pentagon’s illegal and immoral practice of using taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.” Despite causing a backlog of over 400 appointments, Tuberville’s pro-life blockade, which delayed promotions of several senior military officials, was eventually unsuccessful.

Tuberville asserts that with Trump’s executive order and the new policy, the Pentagon can refocus on military readiness rather than promoting a political agenda.
