The Trump administration has moved to terminate several federal “family planning” and LGBT programs after the government shutdown forced deep cuts at Health and Human Services. Among those laid off are workers previously engaged in pushing abortion-promoting, contraception, and pro-LGBT policies.
The Office of Population Affairs, central to Title X family planning programs (often funding contraception and abortion providers), is effectively shuttered under the cuts. Planned Parenthood has historically been a major recipient of such funding, and now stands to lose access to public subsidies channeled through OPA.
President Trump publicly framed the move as a deliberate rollback of Democrat programs. “We will be cutting some very popular Democrat programs that aren’t popular with Republicans, frankly,” he said in a Cabinet meeting. Democrat efforts to sustain the shutdown were motivated by preserving taxpayer support for abortion and gender ideology programs.
For pro-life and conservative advocates, these cuts signal a promising shift. Eliminating federal subsidies and administrative structures that promote abortion, contraception, and LGBTQ education reduces the federal government’s role in enforcing progressive social agendas. If sustained, this move could significantly weaken the institutional infrastructure backing these ideologies.
