On June 17, the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the City of Philadelphia acted illegally when it refused to contract with Catholic Social Services (CSS) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for foster care services because the agency opposed the LGBT agenda and would not certify same-sex couples. As Chief Justice John Roberts wrote:
“CSS seeks only an accommodation that will allow it to continue serving the children of Philadelphia in a manner consistent with its religious beliefs; it does not seek to impose those beliefs on anyone else. The refusal of Philadelphia to contract with CSS for the provision of foster care services unless it agrees to certify same-sex couples as foster parents…violates the First Amendment.”
The decision was hailed as a great victory for the rights of religious organizations, which were given protection against the government discriminating against their religious beliefs. However, what is often overlooked by commentators is whom the Christian social service agency was fighting against. Its enemy in this case was clear: the Democratic politicians and bureaucrats of Philadelphia who were trying to punish the Catholic agency for refusing to support the radical LGBT agenda, as doing so would violate its deeply held belief that marriage can be between only a man and a woman. Had the religious agency compromised its beliefs and gone along with such agenda, the Democrats in Philadelphia would have had no problem contracting with it.
Likewise, the Little Sisters of the Poor, a group of Catholic nuns dedicated to helping the elderly poor and sick, was forced to sue the federal government in 2013 over a mandate that required the group to provide coverage for abortifacients and contraception in its health care plan. To do so would have violated the nuns’ strongly held Catholic beliefs regarding sexuality and the sanctity of life. The Trump Administration, in an attempt to accommodate the religious beliefs of the nuns and similarly situated organizations, promulgated an exemption from the contraceptive and abortifacient mandate in 2017 for religious groups. This exemption, in turn, was then challenged by the states of Pennsylvania (where the nuns are located), New Jersey, California, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Virginia. On July 8, 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled 7-2 to uphold the Trump exemption and hence the Little Sisters did not have to act in violation of their sincerely held Catholic beliefs. As Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in the majority opinion:
“For over 150 years, the Little Sisters have engaged in faithful service and sacrifice, motivated by a religious calling to surrender all for the sake of their brother. But for the past seven years, they—like many religious objectors who have participated in the litigation and rulemakings leading up to today’s decision—have had to fight for the ability to continue their noble work without violating their sincerely help religious beliefs.”
Again, what many people did not comment much on was whom the Little Sisters were fighting against. Once again, a Christian organization was fighting Democratic politicians who were trying to force them to act in violation of their religious beliefs. First, the Little Sisters were fighting against the Democrats in Washington who created Obama Care and its contraceptive and abortifacient coverage mandates. (It must be remembered that not a single Republican member of Congress voted for Obama Care.) Second, they were fighting the Democratic politicians at the state level who both wanted to force the Little Sisters to comply with the mandates and who opposed the Trump religious exemption. Indeed, every state that opposed the exemption was governed by Democrats.
It is Democratic politicians in Washington who are pushing the misnamed Equality Act that is strongly opposed by Christians because it would enshrine in law the radical LGBT agenda and punish those who are opposed to it. It is Democrats like President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (both alleged “Catholics”) who are allowing federal dollars to be used to support abortion providers overseas and who are pushing for federal funding of abortion at home. It is Democratic leaders at the state level who are opposing school choice legislation that is strongly supported by Catholics and Evangelicals and would allow poor parents in horrendous public school districts to use tax dollars to send their children to better Christian and other private schools. It is Democratic states like New York, Illinois, and Virginia that are passing the most radical pro-abortion measures this country has ever seen. And the list goes on and on. In all of these things, one thing is clear: the Democratic Party hates Christianity and Christians because they are one of the few remaining bulwarks against the radical LGBT and abortion agenda. Because traditional Christians refuse to accept the sexual revolution and all the grave damage it has done to children, women, families, and society at large. As Christian theologian Peter Kreeft has written, if Christians “could just erase two of the Commandments, the ones against adultery and lust, the new post-Christian culture of Western Civilization would have absolutely no problem with religion.” And Democrats, the biggest supporters of post-Christian culture, likewise would have no problem with it.
The question must be asked then: Why do any Christians support the Democratic Party? There are two answers. First, ignorance. Either these Christians do not know what the Bible says or else they do not know the positions of the Democratic Party. In the first case, especially in regard to Catholics, many church leaders are doing a poor job of teaching the tenets of the faith to their congregants; indeed, some do this on purpose in regard to moral issues because they do not want to “burden” congregants with hard teachings that demand sacrifice. In the second case, it is hard to believe that anyone in our media-saturated society could not know where the Democrats stand on issues, especially regarding LGBT and abortion ones. However, some people, especially older Americans, think the Democratic Party is still the party of sixty years ago, when it actually supported traditional morality and the family; these people just have not taken the time to notice the party’s 180 degree turn on these issues. Second, complicity; that is, these “Christians” disagree with the Bible and the positions of their churches. In this case, these people are “Christians in Name Only” and, to call them by their true name, “heretics.” If they were honest with themselves, these people would officially leave the Christian faith they have already implicitly abandoned rather than remain and cause scandal and dissension within Christianity.
It is clear that the Democratic Party hates Christians because they are standing in the way of the party’s radical LGBT and abortion agendas. Among other things, in its actions to force Christian foster care service providers to certify same-sex couples, to force nuns to provide contraception and abortifacient coverage in their health plan, to support federal legislation that would codify the radical LGBT agenda, to support the extreme abortion agenda at home and abroad, and to oppose poor children in failing public schools to attend Christian and other private schools, the Democratic Party has explicitly shown its animus toward Christians. It is high time for Christians to heroically stand firm in their beliefs and finally abandon a Democratic Party that abhors them.
