Trump originally signed the executive order when he first entered the presidency and argued that this shift in language is essential for scientific inquiry, public safety, and trust in government. The decision to end the contract for the “Gender X” marker is thus seen as an alignment with this broader policy.
This announcement signifies a change made during President Joe Biden’s time in office that allowed American citizens who do not identify as male or female to use an “X” marker on their official documents, including passports. Last month, The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services were advised against making any final decisions that would result in documentation bearing the “X” marker. The Social Security Administration is the latest agency to implement such changes.
