Russia’s Vologda region slashes abortions by 92%

Russia’s Vologda region has achieved a 92% drop in abortions under Governor Georges Filimonov’s bold leadership. Announced on February 7, 2026, this milestone underscores how pro-family policies can reverse demographic decline and protect the vulnerable unborn against the culture of death.

Filimonov initially aimed to ban abortions outright but pivoted to prohibiting incitement to the procedure while launching a comprehensive pro-life initiative. Collaborating with the Orthodox Church and local organizations, the program engaged clinics in consultations, leading private facilities to halt abortions in May.

The results were immediate: Just 32 abortions occurred in the first quarter—down from 420 the previous year. By July, the region recorded zero abortions, a historic first. At Moscow’s “Return to the Future” conference on January 28, Filimonov hailed the “Family, Bastion of the North Russian” program: “The development of the region is impossible without relying on millennia-old traditions and, at the same time, on real and effective mechanisms… Thanks to a set of measures, last year, for the first time in 11 years, we overcame depopulation in the Vologda region, and the number of births of first children increased.”

He emphasized creating stable conditions for families to thrive, affirming life’s inviolability. This success echoes across Russia: Nine other regions have seen private clinics cease abortions. On January 10, the government directed the Health Ministry to tighten controls on abortion facilities and bolster family support, including prenatal care and prevention programs.Filimonov’s model exposes the radical left’s abortion agenda as a demographic disaster.
