While in Italy an important page has been written against “uterus for rent”, thanks to the law that prosecutes this practice as a universal crime obtaining the approval of the Justice Commission of the House of Representatives, on the other side of the Ocean, Quebec (Canada) is heading towards legalization.
The law
In the parliament of this Canadian province, the process of approving a text that gives legal value to contracts signed between a “surrogate mother” and the two principals has begun. The woman who makes her uterus available must be at least 21 years old and receive no money for the service, other than reimbursement for some specific expenses and compensation in case she loses her job. After the birth of the child held in gestation for a third party, the mother will also have to agree to no longer have any kind of relationship with the child.
The feminist protest
As is the case elsewhere, however, broad sectors of society in Quebec are rising up against this bill, which is detrimental to the dignity of women and children. Some feminist groups are also rising up in protest, including Pour le Droits des Femmes du Québec (PDF), which published a document in French denouncing the “uterus for rent” industry.
Feminists against gender ideology
The feminist group PDF is also among the associations that promote a Declaration of women’s rights based on biological sex. This document “reaffirms the rights of women and girls based on biological sex, and highlights the discrimination resulting from replacing the category of ‘sex’ with that of ‘gender identity.'” The document has already received the endorsement of over 31,000 people from 159 countries in collaboration with 436 organizations.
