Sixteen Republican attorneys general in the United States have expressed significant concerns about pending legislation in Maine which, they argue, could turn the state into a ‘sanctuary’ for abortion and gender transition procedures. They claim that the legislation, LD 227, could also jeopardize conscience protections for hospitals and medical professionals who choose not to participate in such procedures.
The attorneys general argue that the bill violates the federalist structure by imposing Maine’s views on other states. They caution that they will use every constitutional recourse available should it come into effect.
