Greens MLC Dr. Amanda Cohn has described existing laws as obstacles to access and noted the absence of requirements for all public hospitals to offer abortions. The NSW Health Department is offering up to $2 million in grants to support affordable abortion services through organizations like MSI Australia, with new policies expected to be implemented in early 2026.
Current regulations allow healthcare workers to opt out of direct involvement in abortions but mandate referrals to other providers. The proposed reforms aim to expand access by classifying abortion as an essential service in publicly funded facilities, which could limit the scope of objections.
