Parent petitions Llano High School in Texas to remove ‘adult erotica’ books, leading to review of 207 titles for explicit content

A Texas parent, Bonnie Wallace, is petitioning Llano High School to remove 207 books from its library due to explicit content. The books, considered “adult erotica” by Wallace, are available for minors at the school to borrow. Llano Principal Scott Patrick informed Wallace that a ‘reconsideration committee’ will review one book at a time, with each review expected to take roughly 30 days. Given a review time scale of this length, Texas Scorecard estimates it would take over 22 years to assess all the books identified.

Stating her concerns to Llano officials, Wallace argued that children yet to be conceived would have graduated high school before the issue was resolved. Despite the long review process, Llano High School removed André Aciman’s “Call Me by Your Name,” 30 days after the principal’s initial email. The reconsideration committee unanimously voted in favour of the book’s removal from the library. Principal Patrick also confirmed to Wallace that students would no longer take part in the book review committee, a decision warmly welcomed by the parent.
