Over 17,000 abortions reported in Bulgaria in 2025

Official data from Bulgaria’s National Center for Public Health and Analysis reveal that more than 17,000 abortions were carried out across the country last year, with a disturbing number involving young girls. Among the most alarming figures: 92 abortions were recorded for girls under the age of 15, of which 39 were voluntary. Nearly 1,600 abortions occurred among teenagers aged 15 to 19, with 935 performed at the request of the girls themselves.

The majority of abortions took place among women aged 20 to 29 (nearly 7,000 voluntary) and over 30 (nearly 9,000). Sofia recorded the highest total with 3,072 abortions, followed by Plovdiv with 2,192. Other cities with significant numbers included Stara Zagora (1,204), Burgas (1,172), Pleven (1,110), and Varna (1,046). The lowest figures were reported in Vidin (43) and Razgrad (73).

The high number of abortions, particularly among teenagers and very young girls, highlights Bulgaria’s ongoing demographic and moral crisis. These statistics are a tragic reflection of a culture that too often treats unborn children as disposable and fails to support women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. The data serve as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to promote a culture of life, strengthen family support policies, and provide real alternatives to abortion so that every child is welcomed and protected from conception.
