Sponsored by Republican Reps. Josh Williams and Gary Click, the bill protects parents who use their child’s given name and correct pronouns, ensuring state agencies and courts cannot deem such actions as neglect or contrary to the child’s best interest. It also bans using public funds for training that labels biological affirmation as abusive.
Williams declared: “No parent should lose custody, face state intervention, or be deemed unfit simply for affirming a child’s sex. The Affirming Families First Act restores common sense to our child-welfare and family-law systems by making clear that affirming biological sex is not abuse, neglect, or contrary to a child’s best interest — it is a protected parental right.” Click added: “It’s unconscionable to think that local government entities would flag a parent as being a danger to their son for declining to buy him a dress or call ‘him,’ ‘her.’ We will not tolerate such government overreach in the state of Ohio.”
This legislation follows similar pro-parent victories in states like Indiana, North Carolina, and Texas, where laws prevent child welfare investigations for affirming reality. In Ohio, Cuyahoga County’s federally funded programs pushed gender ideology, training social workers to probe families’ acceptance of “SOGIE” identities—practices vacated nationwide after Texas AG Ken Paxton’s lawsuit against Biden’s foster care rule.
Critics like Laura Hanford of the Richard and Helen Devos Center for Human Flourishing warn: “Tragically, kids have been harmed, trafficked and even died in state care after being removed from their families on these false claims of abuse.” Erin Friday of Our Duty-USA echoed: “All roads lead to sex-rejecting interventions when child welfare programs get involved with a child who is distressed about their sex.” This bill exposes the radical left’s war on families, prioritizing confusion over biological truth and endangering children.
