Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has vehemently demanded the immediate suspension of the NHS’s controversial Pathways trial, which plans to administer puberty blockers to over 200 gender-confused children under 16 starting next year. Labeling it “state-sponsored child abuse” and “quack medicine,” Farage urges Prime Minister Keir Starmer to scrap this unethical experiment that endangers vulnerable youth with irreversible harm.
In a strongly worded letter co-signed by Farage and four Reform MPs, they condemn the trial for subjecting children to powerful drugs without solid evidence on long-term effects on physical, psychological, sexual, and reproductive health. “Using children as experimental subjects in this way is ethically indefensible,” the letter states, arguing it violates the NHS’s duty to safeguard and do no harm. Farage has pledged that a future Reform government would abolish the scheme entirely, underscoring a commitment to traditional values and family integrity against progressive overreach.
The intervention comes amid admissions from Health Secretary Wes Streeting of his “deep discomfort” with the trial, which stems from recommendations in the 2024 Cass Review on transgender youth services. Despite this, the government presses forward, prompting legal challenges to bodies like the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the Health Research Authority, NHS England, and Streeting himself.
This persistence reflects a dangerous disregard for scientific caution and moral boundaries in child welfare. Campaigners, including detransitioner Keira Bell—who suffered from puberty blockers as a teen—warn of severe risks like infertility and question the trial’s legality due to its scant proven benefits. This trial threatens to normalize harmful practices under the guise of research, eroding protections for impressionable minors. As opposition mounts, it serves as a rallying cry for conservatives to defend innocence and reject the ideological assault on biological reality and childhood.
