In a shocking assault on parental rights and free speech, Colorado Democrats have rammed through a radical bill that would brand parents as abusers for refusing to bow to the transgender agenda. The so-called “Kelly Loving Act,” which passed the Assembly’s Judiciary Committee in a 7-4 vote on Tuesday, threatens to rip children from their families if parents “misgender” or “deadname” them—terms concocted by the left to silence dissent and enforce a distorted view of reality.
Introduced under the cover of a late Friday evening, the bill—named for a trans-identifying man killed in a 2022 nightclub shooting—labels parents who don’t affirm their child’s self-proclaimed gender identity as perpetrators of “coercive control.” According to the legislation, courts must view a parent’s use of a child’s birth name or biological pronouns as equivalent to threats of violence or forced criminality in custody battles. It’s a blatant attempt to criminalize common sense and punish those who dare to stand by truth.
“This isn’t about protection—it’s about control,” said State Rep. Jarvis Caldwell, a Republican who sounded the alarm on social media. Democrats dropped this bombshell with less than 24 hours’ notice, a sneaky tactic to blindside lawmakers who’d typically have weeks to prepare. “This bill attacks the very foundation of family,” he warned. “It’s designed to strip parents of their God-given authority to guide their children through confusion and dysphoria, all while trampling the First Amendment.”
The bill doesn’t stop at parents. It also shields Colorado from cooperating with states that protect children by removing them from parents who push dangerous transgender medical interventions—puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible surgeries. It even mandates that schools ditch gender-based dress codes and embrace any “chosen name” a student dreams up, no questions asked. If this becomes law, “deadnaming” and “misgendering” will be enshrined as “discriminatory acts,” opening the door to punish not just parents but anyone who refuses to play along with the left’s gender games.
Erin Lee, a Colorado mom and head of Protect Kids Colorado, shared her gut-wrenching story. Her sixth-grade daughter was secretly “transitioned” at school, manipulated into believing her normal growing pains meant she was a boy. Affirming her only deepened her anguish. “If this law existed four years ago, I’d have lost my daughter for refusing to lie to her.” “The state’s pushing a myth that you must transition your child or they’ll die. Now they’re saying: transition them, or we’ll take them away. This is tyranny, pure and simple.”
Lee said that the bill strengthens Colorado’s role as a haven for “wrong-sex mutilation,” luring families to the state to medicalize their kids against a parent’s will. She accused Democrats of rushing the bill through “in the night” to dodge scrutiny, though even with just a day’s notice, more opponents than supporters showed up to fight it.
Colorado parents are already living this nightmare. Earlier this year, a Durango mother begged police to rescue her 17-year-old daughter from a trans-identifying former teacher who’d taken the girl in—only to be refused help. With this bill poised to pass soon, conservatives fear it’s just the beginning of a chilling new era where the state, not parents, decides what’s best for children.
