Mozambique Christians face Islamic attacks

A wave of jihadist violence gripped northern Mozambique in late November 2025, as militants tied to the Islamic State Mozambique Province unleashed coordinated attacks, claiming at least 22 Christian lives and forcing over 80,000 to flee their homes. This brutal assault underscores the relentless persecution facing believers in jihadist hotspots, demanding global condemnation and decisive action against radical Islam.

The terror began on November 20 in Primeiro de Maio village, Muidumbe district, where armed assailants stormed in, killing four civilians and torching homes. Panic rippled to nearby Nampanha and Mapate, leaving bodies strewn amid abandoned ruins as survivors bolted into forests or toward distant safety. By November 25, the carnage escalated to Memba district in Nampula Province, with four more slain in Mazua village. Attacks fanned out to Eráti district, hitting Pavala, Sirissa, Nhage, Nahavara, Lúrio, and Mazula—homes, crops, and churches forsaken overnight.

Door-to-door hunts targeted Christians, amplifying the faith-based genocide. A displaced resident lamented: “Thousands of families are suffering as they try to escape terrorists. Most houses have been burned, and people have been killed.” A local church leader echoed the despair: “The situation is painful. Populations are terrified and without a way out.”

Bishop Alberto Vera of Nacala diocese captured the heartbreak: “This was a week of terror and much suffering. Parents and their children had to flee to safer places. Terror is in the whole district. People have been killed.” He affirmed the Church’s solidarity: “These are families, children, and elderly people who only want to live in peace. The church suffers with them and walks with them, even when everything has been taken away.”

This atrocity exposes the failure to curb ISIS affiliates ravaging Africa, from Mozambique to Nigeria, where similar groups like ISWAP thrive on impunity. As Western leaders dither, faithful communities endure slaughter—it’s time to arm allies, sanction enablers, and prioritize religious liberty over appeasement.
