Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara has been handed a four-game suspension by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) for covering an LGBT patch on his uniform during a match on May 19.  Besides covering up the “homophobia” badge on his jersey with tape, Camara reportedly chose not to partake in a pre-match group picture featuring a banner with a similar message against “homophobia.”

The incident led to a call from French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra for swift action from the league, emphasizing the need for sanctions against the player. In contrast, the Malian Football Federation rallied behind Camara, underlining the need for protection of the fundamental rights of players.

While Monaco Coach Adi Hutter confirmed the club’s support for the league’s initiative against “homophobia”, he referred to Camara’s action as a personal initiative. Details on the player’s actions were withheld, with Hutter promising an internal discussion on the incident.
