Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has appointed Giselle Byrd, a biological male who identifies as transgender, as vice chair of the state’s Commission on the Status of Women’s Programming and Planning Committee. Byrd, executive director of the Boston-based Theater Offensive and a prominent LGBT activist, officially assumed the role on November 1, 2025, after being named to the commission in August.
The appointment has sparked immediate backlash from conservative groups who argue it undermines the purpose of a commission dedicated to women’s issues. The Massachusetts Family Institute called it “the logical conclusion of feminism in Massachusetts society,” asserting that erasing distinctions between the sexes has led to biological males holding positions meant to represent women.
The controversy comes amid a broader national and international pushback against transgender participation in women-specific spaces. In 2025, President Trump issued an executive order barring biological males from women’s sports under Title IX, and the International Olympic Committee announced new rules restricting transgender women from elite female competitions to protect fairness.
