Malta pro-life group demands answers on abortion, euthanasia before election

Malta’s Life Network Foundation has launched a public campaign demanding all six political parties competing in the May 30 snap election answer two simple yes-or-no questions: will they introduce abortion in the next legislature, and will they back voluntary assisted euthanasia?

The NGO launched a website — Ivvota Favur il-Ħajja (Vote in Favour of Life) — putting the questions to all six parties on the ballot: Labour, the Nationalist Party, ADPD–The Green Party, Momentum, Aħwa Maltin, and Imperium Europa.

Prime Minister Robert Abela called the surprise election nine months early, citing geopolitical turmoil and volatile oil prices. His Labour government holds a comfortable parliamentary majority and polls suggest it is on track for a record fourth consecutive term.

The Labour government has already broken ranks on one issue — pledging on May 15 to hold a referendum on voluntary assisted euthanasia if re-elected, while remaining silent on abortion. As of May 22, four of the six parties had responded to the Life Network Foundation’s questionnaire. The foundation has pledged to publish all responses or publicly note which parties refused to answer.

Since Malta’s constitution explicitly names Catholicism as the state religion, the nation’s legal framework includes a near-total prohibition on abortion. Treatment for ectopic pregnancies is permitted. Malta remains one of the last countries in Europe where the unborn are legally protected. The Life Network Foundation is ensuring no party can hide from that fact on election day.
