Kentucky Governor’s ties with anti-Catholic group spark controversy

Kentucky’s Democratic Governor, Andy Beshear, finds himself embroiled in controversy due to his previous affiliation with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a drag queen group known for their anti-Catholic sentiments. This situation has emerged following the announcement of the Los Angeles Dodgers intending to honor the group, which has attracted a considerable amount of backlash. Amid this, photos of Governor Beshear alongside the Kentucky chapter of the group have resurfaced, causing renewed scrutiny, particularly as he seeks re-election this November against Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

The Republican Governors Association highlighted the controversy by sharing a photo of Governor Beshear posing with a member of the group wearing devil horns. They tweeted their disapproval, arguing that such associations made Beshear appear out of touch with Kentuckians. This sentiment was echoed by a Republican legislator, who expressed shock at the sight of the governor alongside people donning devil horns.

In response to the criticism, Governor Beshear remained unapologetic, stating he would not hesitate to take a similar photo again because “everyone in Kentucky counts”. He further accused his critics, including state senator Phillip Wheeler, of homophobia. Sean Southard, a communications director for the Kentucky Republican Party, used this controversy to question Beshear’s affiliations and judgement in a tweet that has since gained significant traction.

Governor Beshear, known for his leftist views, has been criticized for his stance on various issues including opposition to legislation prohibiting infanticide, and vetoing legislation designed to protect minors from what critics consider harmful transgender drugs and surgeries. On the other hand, his opponent, Attorney General Cameron, has leveraged his position to enforce pro-life laws within the state.

The celebration planned by the Dodgers for the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence has provoked a strong response from religious leaders. Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, plans to lead a Eucharistic procession to the Dodgers’ stadium on the day the group is honored. Strickland has also called on Catholics to boycott events and companies supporting the LGBT agenda, including Target, Bud Light, and the upcoming Dodgers game.
