Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced that the state will spend over $23 million on programs to support out-of-state individuals seeking abortions. The announcement comes as neighboring states, such as Indiana, join Kentucky and Missouri in implementing abortion restrictions.

Pritzker stated that while neighboring states are limiting access to abortion, Illinois will remain a safe haven for women seeking abortions. The Illinois Department of Health will allocate $10 million to establish an abortion hotline to assist women in finding abortion providers and scheduling appointments. Additionally, $8 million will be dedicated to providing additional training for abortion providers and a specialty consultation program for at-risk patients.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will open a $5 million grant program for abortion providers, with funding coming from the state’s infrastructure program, Rebuild Illinois. The grant can be used for improvements, repairs, security upgrades, and equipment, including vehicles that can be transformed into mobile care units.

The state’s Department of Healthcare and Family Services, in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and the Chicago Abortion Fund, will launch a hotline next month to support high-risk patients. This hotline, known as the Complex Abortion Regional Line for Access (CARLA), will be staffed by nurses who will assist patients in scheduling appointments within hospital systems and accessing necessary pre-operative testing. CARLA will also partner with the Chicago Abortion Fund to provide patients with funding for reproductive health services, transportation, and childcare costs related to treatment.

Furthermore, the state will introduce a family planning program for Medicaid recipients, covering services such as abortion, vasectomies, tubal ligation, contraception, and cancer screenings. The program will be funded by Medicaid and Title X, although the exact amount of funding was not disclosed by the governor’s spokesperson.

Lastly, the state will reimburse travel costs for state employees and their dependents who live out of state but seek abortion services in Illinois.

It makes one wonder how many lives of unborn Illioisans could be saved if this amount of money were channeled into pregnancy and maternity care and support programs.
