A Christian infantry officer is facing punitive actions by the Idaho Army National Guard for sharing his personal opposition to LGBT ideology on social media. According to his legal representatives, Liberty Counsel, the officer had been expressing his profound beliefs, which he believes to be crucial for the well-being of children.
The posts, shared when the officer was campaigning for a political office in 2023, included comments against promoting events such as drag kids, and medically altering kids displaying gender confusion. The officer also espoused strong views against drag queens’ presence in schools and obscenities in children’s books in libraries.
A formal complaint was filed against the officer by a senior enlisted man claiming to be homosexual, which triggered swift action from the army officials who promptly removed him from his command post. The officer, however, rescinded his resignation shortly after seeking counsel, claiming infringement on his First Amendment rights of free speech and religious freedom.
The case is now a fight to ensure that those who sign up to defend the country’s liberties and constitutional rights also remain entitled to those same rights. Daniel Schmid, Liberty Counsel’s Associate VP of Legal Affairs, stressed that one does not surrender constitutional or statutory rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act by signing up for military service. Schmid noted the blatant disregard for the law under the current administration and the emergence of an alarming pattern of targeting individuals with conservative or religious views. He stressed the need to ensure that military personnel are extended the same protections that they fight to uphold.
