Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, has reportedly voiced concerns over the number of abortions globally during conversations with Republican Senators aimed at securing support for his nomination. According to Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Kennedy stated, “I think there’s too many abortions in the world, let’s just start there.” Despite this, Kennedy’s stance on abortion has varied, most recently advocating for a limitation on abortions to the first 15 weeks.

It’s understood that Kennedy also touched on plans to reintroduce pro-life policies from President Trump’s first term. These include defunding Planned Parenthood and reinstating the Mexico City Policy, barring taxpayer funding of abortions abroad. However, Kennedy also indicated that he supports President Joe Biden’s policy permitting the mailing of chemical abortion drugs across the country.

Kennedy is expected to support the reinstatement of a ban on Title X funds going to organizations promoting abortion. Additionally, the HHS nominee is pledged to reverse the Biden administration’s Section 1557 rule, which requires healthcare providers to recognize an individual’s declared gender, regardless of biological sex.

Responses from pro-life groups to Kennedy’s constructive interactions with Republican senators have been largely positive. Despite disagreements from certain quarters, Kennedy has stated that it’s his duty to echo the policies of President Trump during his tenure, which he reiterated were pro-life.
