Germany: Abortions post 4.6% decline in 2020

In 2020, 90,700 abortions were reported in Germany.

According to current data from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of abortions in Germany in 2020 decreased compared to previous years. Namely, the report stated that 90,700 abortions were reported in Germany in 2020, a decrease of 4.6% compared to 2019, Suddeutsche Zeitung daily reports.

Most abortions were performed on women between the ages of 18 and 34, and most were performed in the first trimester of pregnancy. Although the decline in abortion numbers is notable, there are concerns about the accessibility of abortion services in certain regions, particularly rural areas.

The abortion lobby, however, continues to run hot: while the number of abortions is declining, there are calls for women to have access to safe and legal abortion services regardless of where they live or their socioeconomic status.
