More than 200 people gathered in Helsinki on March 21, 2026, to light 8,645 candles — one for each unborn child lost to abortion in Finland in 2024. The moving vigil, organized by the pro-life group Oikeus elämään ry (Right To Life Association), formed part of the “Muistamme” (“In Remembrance”) initiative to honor the innocent lives ended before birth and to give voice to the grief carried by many mothers and families.

The event began with a spiritual gathering at Luther Church, followed by a candlelit procession to the steps of the Finnish Parliament. Participants, including women who have experienced abortion loss, lit the candles in memory of the children who never had the chance to live. The first candle was lit in remembrance of a child named Sami by a woman named Eevi, who shared a message of gratitude and hope.

Organizer Johannes Laitinen explained that the candles served as a visible reminder of the scale of abortion in a nation of just 5.6 million people. A minute of silence was observed, and volunteers kept the candles burning through the night. This powerful act of remembrance highlights the human tragedy of abortion and calls the nation to reflect on the value of every human life from the moment of conception. In a culture that too often treats the unborn as disposable, such vigils stand as a courageous witness to the sanctity of life and the urgent need to build a society that protects the most vulnerable.
