Faroe Islands legalizes abortion on demand up to 12 weeks

The Faroe Islands, a traditionally conservative archipelago under Danish sovereignty with a strong Lutheran heritage, has tragically legalized abortion on demand up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, dismantling decades of pro-life protections that safeguarded the unborn. On December 4, 2025, the parliament passed the measure by the slimmest margin—17-16—following a failed attempt last year that ended in a tie. This shift, effective July 1, 2026, replaces a 1956 law restricting abortions to cases of rape, incest, maternal health risks, or severe fetal issues, where the islands maintained an admirably low rate of just 3 per 1,000 women—far below Europe’s average of 16.

The decision bows to years of relentless activism, marking a sorrowful erosion of moral values in a society where over 70% identify as Lutheran. Abortion advocates, spearheaded by groups like Fritt Val (Free Choice) formed in 2017 by young women plotting in secret, celebrated the vote as a “historic day” affirming women’s autonomy. Influenced by external pressures from the Nordic Council, UN CEDAW, and NGOs such as Amnesty International, the campaign overcame public opposition—recent polls showed only 46% favored changes, with a majority against.

Pro-life defenders, including MPs and groups like Pro Vita Faroe Islands, fiercely opposed the bill during a grueling seven-hour debate, decrying it as a poison to society. Pro Vita praised those who stood for the unborn, exposing errors in the legislation and warning that liberal abortion laws foster a callous disregard for the vulnerable, including heightened risks for fetuses with disabilities—as evidenced in nations like Ireland, where rates skyrocketed post-legalization.

This precedent is alarming, as it risks unleashing a dramatic surge in abortions, weakening societal support for the disabled, and corroding the soul of the Faroese people amid a broader Nordic trend, such as Denmark’s recent extension to 18 weeks. Pro-life advocates urge vigilance, emphasizing that the narrow victory exposes the fragility of this radical agenda. If unchallenged, such measures empower global forces to dismantle protections for the innocent, demanding a resolute stand to restore sanity and defend human dignity.
