In a heartbreaking case exposing the perils of unsafe abortions and underage exploitation, Chengalpattu District Police are investigating the death of a 15-year-old Class X student who succumbed to complications from a botched home abortion on February 1, 2026. The girl, from Chengalpattu near Chennai, died at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) after her family’s desperate attempt to terminate her 10-week pregnancy went fatally wrong.
The ordeal began on January 4 when the teen, suffering from fever, was taken to a private hospital. Doctors confirmed her pregnancy, prompting her relatives to perform an abortion at home—a reckless decision that led to severe deterioration. She was rushed to Government Chengalpattu Hospital and later referred to RGGGH, where staff alerted authorities. The All-Women Police Station in Chengalpattu registered a case based on medical records.A post-mortem is underway to pinpoint the cause of death.
Preliminary investigations reveal a 21-year-old neighbor allegedly impregnated her, resulting in charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police have interrogated the suspect and the girl’s mother, vowing thorough scrutiny. A senior officer stated: “We are probing what led to the girl’s death. After investigation, we will take appropriate action against whoever is responsible.”
This incident underscores the grave risks of illegal home abortions, often driven by stigma and lack of support, which claim countless young lives. It also highlights the urgent need for stronger protections against child exploitation and policies promoting life-affirming alternatives like counseling and adoption.
