Cardinal Blase Cupich, delivering the invocation at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC), made no mention of Catholic teachings on life issues and abortion. This comes as Planned Parenthood is offering free abortions and vasectomies at the event. Cupich’s prayer invoked themes of unity, peace, the nation’s diverse nature and the need to contribute to a peaceful future. Notably, he did not mention the name of Jesus Christ.
Cupich directly disregarded Catholic moral issues amidst the openly pro-abortion stance of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and the services offered by Planned Parenthood at the DNC. Immediate backlash followed, as several Catholics expressed their criticism online.
EWTN host Raymond Arroyo, Tyler, Texas’ emeritus Bishop Joseph Strickland, pro-life activist Lila Rose, and Crisis Magazine Editor-in-Chief Eric Sammons, among others, called out Cupich’s evasion of these topics. Some marked Cupich’s presence at the DNC as a missed opportunity to advocate for life issues and oppose the evil ideologies advocated by the Democrats.
