Auschwitz and the Pill

The links between Nazis experimentations in Auschwitz and the contraception industry.

Arte (a Franco-German channel on the far left) recently broadcast a report on medical experiments carried out by Dr Claus Clauberg, one of the criminal “doctors” of Auschwitz, on women detained in the camp to develop forced sterilization techniques. Part of this “work” (which resulted in the death in excruciating pain of many women) served as the basis for the development of contraceptive pills. Here is what the channel said about this program:

The crimes at Auschwitz by gynecologist Claus Clauberg, who advocated forced sterilization. A hard-hitting documentary about Nazi medical experiments. Auschwitz, 1943. Leny Adelaar, 24, is “selected” in Auschwitz among a group of women. Singles are separated from married women: the former are killed immediately, the latter will become the guinea pigs of the criminal doctor Carl Clauberg. He will test on them his new sterilization methods without surgery. Injections into the ovaries, fallopian tubes blocked by an inflammatory process, parts of the uterus removed…: if a certain number of them survive these experiments, most suffer excruciating pain and some will become sterile. At the end of the war, Clauberg spent ten years in Russian prisons. Returning to Germany in 1955, he was recognized by former victims, but died two years later before a new trial.

In the pay of Himmler

Historians have today reconstructed the path of the criminal gynecologist and obstetrician, considered before the war as an authority and supported by the pharmaceutical industry (including Siemens and Schering). His former victims, survivors of block 10, and whose word filled with dignity carries this film, emphasize that it was Himmler who personally brought Carl Clauberg the means he was asking for. Paradox: the latter can be considered as the inventor of the contraceptive pill. And the Bayer group, which bought the Schering laboratory, is making immense profits thanks to its work on synthetic hormones.
