The Archdiocese of Corrientes in Argentina has formally declared a “marriage” between two transgender activists invalid, reaffirming that the sacrament of marriage can only exist between one man and one woman according to biological sex.
The controversial ceremony took place on January 28, 2026, at Our Lady of Pompeii parish. It involved Solange Ayala, a biological male identifying as female, and Isaías, a biological female identifying as male. Although the parish priest had initially received permission from Archbishop José Adolfo Larregain based on the couple’s legal documents, the archdiocese has now opened a canonical investigation.In an official statement, the archdiocese explained that “the omission of essential canonical conditions distorts the profound meaning of the sacrament and generates confusion among the faithful.”
The investigation will examine how the authorization was granted and determine any responsibilities.This decisive action upholds the unchanging teaching of the Catholic Church that marriage is a lifelong covenant between one biological man and one biological woman, ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children.
The archdiocese’s response demonstrates that gender ideology cannot redefine the natural and sacramental reality of marriage. Argentina has long been a battleground on these issues, having legalized same-sex civil marriage in 2010 and adopted one of Latin America’s most permissive gender identity laws in 2012. The Church has consistently opposed these developments as threats to the family and the truth about human nature.
