Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, has publicly expressed his firm opposition to abortion, referring to it as murder, a view informed by his philosophical, biological, and political perspectives. However, despite his staunch opposition, Milei has not yet presented any specific bills to counter the existing abortion law within his first three months in office.
Milei’s stance was echoed during the 2023 elections by his running mate and current vice president, Victoria Villarruel. She downplayed the urgency of repealing the abortion law, considering the unmanageable economic challenges facing Argentina. Despite this, congresswoman Rocío Bonacci, from Milei’s victorious political coalition ‘La Libertad Avanza’ (Freedom Advances), stirred controversy within the coalition by introducing her own bill to repeal the existing abortion law, without the coalition’s approval or a consultation with the president.
Bonacci remains resolute, asserting that her initiative is independent of the executive branch and aligns with her personal belief in defending life. The move sparked significant internal debate within the coalition.
